Redesigning a High-Stakes Contract Experience
I designed a standardized, fillable leasing documentation system that transformed manual, error-prone legal documents into reusable DocuSign templates supporting new leases, renewals, and custom addendums with minimal friction.

01 — Brief
Project Brief
The company's existing residential lease contained internal contradictions, unclear terms, and structural issues that made it difficult for non-expert users to understand and apply correctly. These flaws resulted in recurring disputes, inconsistent enforcement, and increased legal and operational risk.
02 — Challenge
The Challenge
Legal documents that contradict themselves fail at both compliance and usability. In this case, unclear language and poor information architecture created confusion for tenants and enforcement challenges for property managers, exposing owners to unnecessary risk.
Key pain points
- 01Internally contradictory lease clauses
- 02Legally unsound or conflicting language
- 03Poor hierarchy and fragmented structure
- 04Ambiguity causing inconsistent enforcement
- 05High cognitive load for tenants unfamiliar with legal contracts
"A contract that contradicts itself guarantees failure not at signing, but later, when misinterpretation becomes conflict. In high-stakes systems, UX must eliminate ambiguity before it turns into risk."
03 — Solution
The Solution
The lease was rebuilt from the ground up as a cohesive information system, not a patchwork of clauses. I corrected contradictory and unsound language, re-architected the document structure, and redesigned content to prioritize clarity, enforceability, and comprehension.
04 — Process
Design Process
Audit & Risk Identification
Identified contradictory clauses and legal inconsistencies. Mapped dispute history to specific lease language failures. Flagged compliance and enforceability risks.
Information Architecture Redesign
Reorganized the lease into a logical, user-centered structure. Consolidated overlapping sections. Clarified dependencies between base lease and addendums.
Content Design & UX Writing
Rewrote clauses for precision, clarity, and consistency. Standardized terminology across the document. Explicitly defined obligations, rights, and consequences.
Visual Hierarchy & Usability
Improved typographic hierarchy for scannability. Highlighted critical terms and decision points. Reduced cognitive load through layout and spacing.
Validation & Final Review
Cross-checked revisions for internal consistency. Ensured removal of contradictions did not introduce new risk. Reviewed from tenant, manager, and owner perspectives.
